Welcome to Title I
This page is for parents and guardians of Title I students to help them better understand the Title I program. It is a goal of Title I to reach all parents and guardians and to provide them with tools and information that will enable them to better support their children's academic development
What is Title I?
Title I is a federal program that provides financial assistance to local schools to meet current educational needs of children at the preschool, elementary and secondary school levels.
The purpose of the Title I program is to provide children at economically disadvantaged schools with educational opportunities that foster academic development by helping those children:
- Succeed in the regular classroom
- Attain grade level proficiency
- Improve achievement in basic and more advanced skills.
These purposes are accomplished through supplemental education programs, school-wide programs, and increased involvement of parents in their children's education.

How Do Parents Participate in the Title I Program?
Parents play a vital role in the Title I program. The new statute under No Child Left Behind defines parental involvement as “the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities." The Dan Mills staff works to increase effective parental involvement in the program.
Opportunities for parents to participate in the Title I program include:
- Attend parent-teacher conferences
- Attend workshops to help parents work with their children at home
- Receive school to home curriculum and materials
- Receive timely information about other Title I programs
- Serve on the Metro Parent Advisory Council (PAC)
The Annual Title I Meeting is held in August at the first PTO Open House. At this meeting, parents have the opportunity to:
- Review the Parent Involvement Policy and make changes and suggestions that will improve the Title 1 program.
- Review the Home-School Compact and make changes and suggestions that will increase parents’ ability to enhance their children’s learning.
- Meet the staff of Dan Mills Elementary.
- Offer suggestions as to how parents can be involved in the program.
- Discuss opportunities for workshops and parent training sessions that will increase parents’ ability to partner with the school in promoting the education of their children at school and at home.
